UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski eyeing ‘superfight’ with Conor McGregor to ensure GOAT status

Alex Volkanovski would welcome the chance to fight Conor McGregor and secure his legacy as the greatest of all time.

The Irishman returns to action this weekend at UFC 257 when he takes on Dustin Poirier in a rematch of their 2014 classic.

Although their first encounter lasted one round, their clash at UFC 178 set McGregor on the path to superstardom as he went and claimed the featherweight title and the lightweight title in just over two years.

‘The Notorious’ has never lost a fight in the UFC at featherweight and managed to defeat the likes of Max Holloway, Poirier, Chade Mendes and Jose Aldo on his astonishing rise through the 145lbs.

Volkanovski has also managed to take the featherweight division by storm, but is well aware of the glamour and glitz which comes from a ‘red panty night’ from facing McGregor.

“We talk about the hype around his fights, you’d be an idiot to say you wouldn’t take that fight — the money, the whole circus around it,” Volkanovski said on Fox Sports’ UFC Fight Week.

“It’d be fun, exciting, but not just that — there’s a little bit of a connection because he was a featherweight champion and I’ve taken out Max Holloway and Jose Aldo, the other former champions.

“There’s only one other champion I haven’t fought and it’s Conor, so there is a bit of history there.

“For me to be GOAT (greatest if all-time) status, it makes sense, and then you’ve got all the other bonuses around it.”

The Australian handed Holloway back-to-back losses from their title fights and now looks set to face the resurgent Brian Ortega in his next defence.

But having once weighed more than 200lbs during his career as a rugby league forward, ‘Volka’ is more than comfortable in climbing back up the divisions to face McGregor.

“But I’d move up, whatever it is, put the featherweight title on the line — whatever it is, I’d do it,” Volkanovski added.

“I’ve got a division to take care of first, I’ll do the defences and do my thing and we’ll see if that fight can ever happen.”
