Phil Foden is the best young player in the world on current form, believes Rio Ferdinand, after watching the Manchester City star shine in the 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Man City booked their place in the Champions League final for the first time in their history with a superb 4-1 aggregate win over last year’s beaten finalists.

A Riyad Mahrez brace did the job on Tuesday at the Etihad, but it was an all-round team performance from Pep Guardiola’s men, with the likes of Ruben Dias, Fernandinho and John Stones all starring in defence, but Foden really catching the eye going forward.

The England international set up Mahrez’s second goal and came very close to scoring himself, hitting the post in the second half.

Such was his performance on Tuesday, and recent displays, that Ferdinand believes he is playing better than any of his contemporaries around the world, including PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

‘At the moment I would say Phil Foden is the best young player on form in the world right now,’ the former Manchester United defender told BT Sport.

‘On form, I think he is. Whether he’s the best player…but on form I think he is.

‘Mbappe didn’t play today, Haaland hasn’t played at this level.

‘I’m not saying Foden’s the best player but at the moment right now he’s the most in-form.’

Ferdinand added: ‘It feels like he’s unfazed at this level, semi-final of the Champions League and he’s come in here making match-defining moments and he’s 20-years-old.’

Gary Lineker dubbed him a ‘stunningly talented young man,’ as the praise continued.

Foden notched his 10th assist of the season and having already scored 14 goals over the campaign so far he becomes the first Man City player to reach double figures for goals and assists over the season.

There will be an expectation that Foden will start for England in the European Championships this summer and his international teammate Declan Rice was certainly impressed on Tuesday, tweeting: ‘Foden is very very special.’
