Edouard Mendy is expecting ‘the best’ of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to be evidenced next season after tough debut campaigns for Chelsea’s attacking pair.

The Blues splashed out £72million to sign Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, while his fellow Germany international Werner also made the switch from RB Leipzig to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £47.5million.

But after shining in the Bundesliga last season, both have struggled to adapt to the speed and toughness of the Premier League thus far.

Havertz, 21, is on four top-flight goals, with two of those coming in last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Fulham.

Werner, who scored 28 Bundesliga goals last season, has only managed to find the back of the net six times in the Premier League.

However, Blues goalkeeper Mendy is in no doubt of their quality having watched them in training every day, and thinks they will be at their very best next term.

‘They are really good players,’ Mendy told Chelsea’s official website.

‘They are young players and it is the first time that they have moved to another country.

‘I think they needed a couple of months to adjust and understand the Premier League but I see them every day and I know how good they are.

‘I am happy for them. They showed their qualities on the pitch.

‘Next season, 100 per cent, we will see the best of Timo and Kai. Even this year, we have enjoyed their good levels of performance and they are important for us.’
